TORTOISE LEARNS TO FLY
By the riverside, there was a Tortoise trying to learn to fly.
“Come on… 1, 2, 3… Come on…”
A Sparrow flew by, saw this and asked:
“What are you doing?”
The Tortoise sighed and replied:
“I’m learning to fly.”
The Sparrow was very surprised and asked the Tortoise:
“What? Didn’t you win that race with the Rabbit? It’s all thanks to your four legs.”
The Tortoise frowned and replied:
“Come on, don’t mention it again. I and Rabbit will have a competition again. The rabbit won’t fall asleep in the middle of the game anymore, so he’s easily win over me. This time, when I learn to fly, I’ll have another duel with Rabbit.”
Sparrow laughed:
“But you don’t have wings!”
But the Tortoise didn’t change his decision.
“No matter what, I must learn to fly.”
Sparrow said again:
“But you can’t fly without wings. I advise you to give up that idea. I’m going to play now!”
After the Sparrow left, the Tortoise took a lot of feathers and sewed a pair of beautiful wings. He tried his best to practice, but many days passed and he still had no progress. The Tortoise thought:
“This is not good. I have to go and invite the teacher to teach.”
For a few days, he went to a craggy cliff and hoped to find his teacher.
One day, the Tortoise came to a cliff, suddenly a large pair of wings flew over. The Tortoise greatly admired and thought:
“This is the teacher I am looking for.”
The tortoise shouted:
“Please teach me to fly!”
The Eagle kindly reminded the Tortoise:
“I and Tortoise are not the same. Tortoise has no wings, how can you fly?”
The Tortoise held out his homemade wings, repeatedly asking:
“I have wings. Please accept me as your disciple.”
The Eagle had to accept the Tortoise’s request.
“Well, if you has decided, I will help. But I’m not sure you will be able to fly!”
The Tortoise built his own wings, the Eagle lifted the Tortoise and flew higher than the treetops. Tortoise loved it and shouted:
“Aha! I’m flying!”
While they were flying in the air, the Eagle let go of the Tortoise. The Tortoise was like a kite with a broken string, free falling. Even though the Tortoise tried to flap his wings, they didn’t work.
The Tortoise fell straight onto a large rock which caused the Tortoise’s shell to crack.
Since then, there have been horizontal and vertical cracks on the Tortoise’s shell which are traces of the time the Tortoise learned to fly with the Eagle.
